Design Manager

An opportunity exists for an experienced engineering professional to step into a leadership role overseeing multi-disciplinary design delivery for major infrastructure programs. This position will suit someone who thrives on leading technical teams, improving processes and delivering practical, efficient engineering solutions.

Role Overview
The Design Manager will act as the primary engineering representative, leading multi-disciplinary technical teams to deliver accurate, high-quality design outputs. The role focuses on ensuring efficient project delivery, maintaining strong safety standards and driving value-for-money outcomes through lean design principles. 
Working closely with internal stakeholders and project teams, the Design Manager will oversee design quality, coordinate engineering deliverables and ensure projects are delivered on time and within agreed budgets.

You are a confident engineering leader who can bring people together to deliver strong technical outcomes. You are comfortable challenging ideas constructively, engaging with subject matter experts and driving continuous improvement in engineering processes. 
With strong communication and stakeholder management skills, you can translate complex technical information into clear insights that support informed decision-making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead multi-disciplinary engineering design teams to deliver consistent and high-quality technical outputs
  • Ensure designs meet safety, sustainability and technical standards
  • Coordinate project design activities to meet agreed milestones, budgets and service agreements
  • Work with project teams to develop scopes of work, cost estimates and work breakdown structures
  • Oversee quality assurance processes including review and verification of engineering deliverables
  • Clearly communicate design risks, costs and scheduling impacts to decision makers
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, project managers and technical specialists
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering design processes, systems and documentation
  • Promote a culture of safety, collaboration and knowledge sharing across teams
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
  • Degree qualification in Engineering (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering design and design review within infrastructure environments
  • Strong leadership capability with the ability to guide and motivate technical teams
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Proven ability to analyse complex problems and develop practical engineering solutions
  • Experience preparing technical documentation and professional reports
  • Strategic planning and project coordination capabilities
  • Ability to identify opportunities for innovation and improved design efficiency
  • Experience reviewing or auditing engineering reports and designs (desirable)
  • Project management qualifications or equivalent experience (desirable)
