Role Overview

Our client is seeking a Design Manager to support capital projects across the Water Civil, Minor and Regional portfolios, including earth bank storages, tanks, and asset renewals. The role involves leading and coordinating multi disciplinary design teams to deliver high quality, timely design outcomes while ensuring robust design processes and governance are maintained.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills are essential, with the confidence to manage challenging conversations and clearly articulate technical opinions. Experience with earth bank storages and tank rehabilitation or replacement will be highly regarded. This role suits a strong design leader who can balance safety, quality, efficiency, and customer needs while driving practical and effective engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the primary engineering representative and lead multi-disciplinary design teams to deliver accurate, timely and value for money design outputs across capital infrastructure projects.
  • Provide strong design leadership, ensuring robust governance, quality assurance, and compliance with relevant technical standards, Safety in Design (SiD) and Sustainability in Design (SuiD) requirements.
  • Plan and manage design delivery milestones, ensuring scope, cost, schedule and expectations are clearly communicated and achieved.
  • Drive lean design principles, challenge existing approaches, and work collaboratively with subject matter experts to deliver practical, minimum viable solutions.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to clearly communicate design outcomes, risks, costs and schedule impacts to support informed decision making.
  • Monitor and report on design performance, including variations, extensions of time and cost impacts in line with agreed service requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement through innovation, knowledge sharing and the adoption of new and emerging technologies where appropriate.
  • Foster strong working relationships across engineering, delivery and broader business teams to support successful project outcomes.
Essential Criteria
  • Bachelor of Engineering (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience in engineering design and design management within infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including managing challenging discussions.
  • Proven analytical and problem solving capability.
  • Experience producing clear, professional technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated leadership, strategic thinking and commitment to safety and quality outcomes
Desirable Criteria
  • Associate Diploma or postgraduate qualification in Project Management, Business Management or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience auditing and reviewing technical designs and reports prepared by others.
  • Exposure to water, civil or infrastructure projects, including tanks, earth bank storages or asset renewals.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing innovative design approaches or improving design efficiency and delivery processes.
